More than honey (Un mondo in pericolo)

Markus Imhoof

SWITZERLAND, 2012

91‘

More than one third of our foodstock depends on pollination carried out by bees. Albert Einstein allegedly said: 'If one day bees shall disappear, the extinction of the human species is to follow four years later'.

Since his childhood, the renowed swiss director Markus Imhoof has had a profound familiarity with the extraordinary universe of these indefatigable insects. His grandfather's hive was a magical place to him; today his daughter, together with her husband, runs a research project on bees in Australia. Starting with a beekeeper in the Swiss Alps, Markus Imhoof has traveled across the globe interviewing various scientists. In its work he narrates the phenomenal intelligence of these insects and their social coexistence. Thanks to a highly developed shooting technique, impressive and unique images show us life inside a beehive, including the mating of a queen bee in flight.

'An endangered world' is not just another film on that mediatic event - highly relevant to our quotidian lives -: the death of bees. This documentary focuses on life on our planet, including the interaction of man and bees, zeal and avidity, superorganisms and collective intelligence.
