They are the hottest, the driest, the harshest places on our planet, and the setting for the earth’s most dramatic stories of survival and endurance. The deserts. Alluring and austere, beautiful and unforgiving, deserts make up a third of the earth’s surface. Here, in a land of extremes, where the heat and sun are unrelenting, life stages its most valiant stand. Arab Sands explores how the desert is more than just a wasteland or a scorched horizon, the desert is a foe. Relentless, inexorable. a lethal force advancing across the miles. Every year, another 25,000 square miles of the earth turn to sand and dust. The deserts are swallowing our planet. How can scientists halt this monster in its tracks? Stopping the growth of the desert has become an urgent global effort. With one-third of the earth’s surface covered in arid lands it would seem as if nothing could possibly survive here. Yet, amazingly, many creatures do. How do animals manage to eke out a life in these barren, unforgiving places- with temperatures that soar up to 140 degrees, and rainfall limited to only one or two inches a year? Arabs Sands explore these bitter wastelands to find out how a place of death is, in fact, remarkably alive. We see discover these last outposts of humanity, of wildlife, of survival itself.
