In the last few days the De Rerum Natura conference series<\/span> hosted <\/span>two of the most <\/span>renowned experts<\/span> in the field of economics and medicine <\/span>in Italy<\/span>: Professor Carlo Cottarelli, Director of the Italian Public Accounts<\/span> Observatory<\/span>, and <\/span>the immunologist <\/span>Alberto Mantovani, Scientific Director and President of the <\/span>\u201cFondazione Humanitas per la Ricerca\u201d.<\/span> Both<\/span> shared their reflections<\/span> on the theme “Building from memory”.<\/span><\/p>\n

Prof. Carlo Cottarelli, interviewed by Luisa Vuillermoz, <\/span>the Festival\u2019s <\/span>Artistic Director, drew from his latest book “All’Inferno e ritorno. Per la nostra rinascita sociale ed economica” (Einaudi, 2021) to discuss<\/span> the three principles that <\/span>should steer<\/span> the country towards <\/span>the path of <\/span>sustainable development: <\/span>firstly, ensuring a level playing field<\/span>, i.e.<\/span> giving everyone a chance in life. <\/span>Secondly, rewarding merit and<\/span> solidarity<\/span>: the lucky ones tend to have a bette chance in life than the less fortunate ones. Thirdly,<\/span> there is room for redistribution<\/span>of wealth<\/span>.”<\/span><\/p>\n

In his book, Cottarelli <\/span>analyses<\/span> the consequences of the crisis, the weaknesses of the economic system<\/span>, which<\/span> the <\/span>pandemic exposed<\/span>, and<\/span> the opportunities that arise from <\/span>economic recovery. He also highlights<\/span>the <\/span>potential<\/span> of sustainable development on a social, financial and environmental level.<\/span><\/p>\n

The conference ended with an extensive Q&A session with<\/span> a thoroughly engaged audience<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Full house in Cogne and a large online audience <\/span>for the <\/span>event featuring<\/span> Prof. Alberto Mantovani, who spoke about “immunological memory: from cancer to <\/span>C<\/span>ovid-19″, answering questions on <\/span>the <\/span>pandemic and vaccines. <\/span>\u201cOne of<\/span> the reasons <\/span>why people are skeptical about vaccines<\/span>,’ he explained, ‘is <\/span>that they find it hard to reason<\/span> in terms of risks and benefits<\/span>.<\/span> In medicine zero risk<\/span> simply <\/span>does not exist. <\/span>\u201cIt would be best,’ Mantovani continued, ‘to provide accurate information with every single vaccine dose<\/span>.\u201d<\/span> At the end of <\/span>event<\/span>, the audience showed its appreciation with <\/span>a<\/span> sustained<\/span> applause followed by questions and requests for further information.<\/span><\/p>\n

The last De Rerum Natura <\/span>event <\/span>will be held in Cogne on 12 August<\/span>. T<\/span>he constitutional judge and former Prime Minister Giuliano Amato will speak <\/span>about<\/span> “Identity and history”. Through these conferences, the Gran Paradiso Film Festival continues to pursue its mission: to <\/span>stimulate<\/span> people\u2019s <\/span>curiosity and a<\/span> yearning to discover new things<\/span>, not only through the <\/span>outstanding films in competition<\/span>, but also <\/span>through such popular in-depth series.<\/span><\/p>\n
